From: Cape Cod Web Service . com

Re: Network maintenance

We were just now notified from the telco (our bandwidth supplier) that on Wednesday, December 7th, at 00:01:00 2005 they will be performing "network upgrades" and they are scheduled to end on Wednesday December 7th, at 08:00:00 2005. They are giving about an eight (from midnight to 8am MST) hour period to replace equipment and upgrade software.

Expect to get some disconnects and "unable to connect" errors during the update window.

This update has nothing to do with our systems, it is completely the teclo's equipment. We are sorry for the late notice, but again, we were just notified.

When they notify us the upgrade is complete, we will send out another email.

Thank you,

Email Phishing scam May 23 2005, 07:47 pm
From: Cape Cod Web Service

To: All Customers

Re: EBay Phishing scam

Description:

We have been watching a new batch of Phishing scams over the last week or so. They come with an EBay logo and look authentic, they are NOT. Do NOT click on any link in them and do not respond to them.

They are scams. They get the user to input usernames and passwords as well as credit card numbers. We have attempted to block them and have seen a dramatic drop in the number that get through. They shift sending points and particulars many times in one mailing, it makes them hard to block.

The emails read something like this:

-------------------------------------------------

Dear eBay Member,

We recently noticed one or more log in attempts to your eBay account from a foreign IP address and we have reasons to believe that your account was used by a third party without your authorization If you recently accessed your account while traveling, the unusual login attempts may have been initiated by you The login attempt was made from: IP address: 150.168.40.104 ISP Host: cache-66 proxy aol com

By now, we used many techniques to verify the accuracy of the information our users provide us when they register on the Site However, because user verification on the Internet is difficult, eBay cannot and does not confirm each user's purported identity Theft, we have established an offline verification system to help you evaluate with who you are deal with.

Please save this fraud alert ID for your reference

Please Note - If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to temporally suspend your account.

* Please do not respond to this e-mail as your reply will not be received Respectfully, Trust and Safety Department eBay Inc.

-------------------------------------------------

PLEASE IGNORE THESE EMAILS, THEY ARE SCAMS.

We would like to thank James H. for bringing this to our attention.

Thank you,

Happy faceMay 2005 Newsletter May 13 2005, 02:22 pm
Cape Cod Web Service.com Newsletter

Welcome to our newsletter.

In this newsletter:

1. Enforcing check payment agreement.

2. Spam Filtering -- turning up the filter.

3. Spyware removal program.

==================

1. Enforcing check payment agreement.

This action only applies to customers paying by CHECK.

Over the past several months we have had a growing problem with late payments. While most of our customers pay on time, there is a small number who regularly fail to do so, and the majority of these customers also fail to respond to automated email reminders, forcing us to use more expensive and time-consuming paper invoices. We have decided rather than penalizing the rest of our customers by raising prices, we will enforce the check payment agreement.

Starting May 31st, 2005 all accounts that have not received June 2005's payment, (and all subsequent months payments by the end of the previous month), will be suspended automatically. The account will remain on the system, but customers will not be able to log on.

This will serve as notice to the customer that the account is overdue. If payment is made later, we will re-enable the account after receipt of the check. Please note that payment must be received for ALL past due amounts for your account to be reinstated in this manner. We regret that this action is necessary, but in fairness to our other customers, we have no choice. Your check must actually be RECEIVED before your account will be reactivated. This process will take anywhere from three to seven days after the customer mails the check. If an account is repeatedly delinquent we will enforce the $10.00 re-connect charge, but, at this time we hope the above action will rectify the problem.

Again this action ONLY applies to customers paying by CHECK.

We have in place Checking Account Debiting, Debit Account and Credit Card payment systems that will avoid late payments. To enroll in one of these automatic payment systems please email Accounting@ccwebs.com for more information.

To read the terms of service agreement in full please go to: http://www.ccwebs.com/agreement.htm

The Terms of Service Agreement paragraph regarding check payments is below:

"If payment is by check, payment is due by the 1st of each month. We do NOT send out invoices of any kind, it is the sole responsibility of the User to remit timely payments. Dishonored checks are subject to a collection fee to be determined by Cape Cod Web Service . Com in its sole and absolute discretion and User's account may be suspended until the account is current. If payment is not received, service will be suspended or terminated and a re-activation fee of $10.00 will be added to charges for additional service. In no event shall the User stop payment by use of their holders bank, whereby a charge back may or may not occur. If a charge is refused by Users credit card/debit or checking account by use of the aforementioned method the User understands and agrees to pay a $25.00 termination fee."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Spam Filtering -- turning up the filter.

As many users know our spam filter has been up and running for about a year now. We have continually made adjustments to the system to improve its accuracy. Unfortunately, Spam vendors have continually found new ways of spamming, some of which are very clever in evading the filters. We have received many inquiries about increasing the spam filter's readiness to flag spam.

We have made a decision to turn up the spam filter on a trial basis. This new setting will catch much more spam but, unfortunately, may catch many more legitimate mailings as well. We ask our customers to email us at webmaster@ccwebs.com should the new settings become a problem in flagging legitimate email as spam. If the new settings cause too much of a problem we will re-adjust the settings back to a lower point.

Again, please email webmaster@ccwebs.com should the new settings cause a problem. We will make a decision based on the number of emails we receive.

IMPORTANT! - CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE THEIR SPAM SET TO AUTO-DELETE SHOULD CHECK THE DELETED EMAIL BEFORE EXITING THE PROGRAM OR EMPTYING THE DELETED BOX AS A PRECAUTION TO MAKE SURE WANTED EMAILS ARE NOT DELETED.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Spyware removal program.*

Many, many customers have complained about spyware running on their systems. Spyware is any type of program installed on your computer without your knowledge or consent which is used to collect information about you and or your computing habits, typically to direct you to advertising websites or to steal personal information that may be used in some sort of identity fraud. Common symptoms include large numbers of "pop-up" windows as soon as you connect to the internet, an unexpected change in your home page, or a general sluggishness in computer performance. Unfortunately spyware is deposited on your computer by the web sites you visit. Although some newer virus protection programs scan for known spyware threats, they do not offer the level of protection available through dedicated anti-spyware programs. This is NOT virus protection; spyware is a whole different "ball game".

For over a year now we have been running "Spyware Doctor(R)" on our in house systems. We have found it to be a program that works well and with little overhead to the computer. The program also seems to "play nice" with other programs.

We have made special arraignments with the makers of Spyware Doctor to bring a special price to our customers. Spyware Doctor normally sells for $29.95 over the Internet as a download. We are offering it to our customers as a download for $20.00 per license (plus MA sales tax, if you live in MA).

Should you want to purchase a license for the Spyware Doctor at the reduced rate you will need to purchase it from us at: http://www.ccwebs.com/spyware-doctor/

To read more about Spyware Doctor go to: https://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/

You may download a trial version (please test the software before purchase as there are no refunds) directly from PC Tools at: https://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/download/

The trial version will identify all of the threats found by the registered version; however it will remove only a small subset consisting of some of the more common threats. In addition to removing all detected threats, registration will enable a live update feature which can automatically add new threats to the list of items for scanning, and automated scanning schedules, along with "real-time" protections that work with your browser to stop malicious pages from loading and to keep spyware off your computer altogether.

Please note that if you use the registration feature in the trial version or purchase it on their web site you will pay full price. You should download the trial version and then use the link above to make your license purchase from CCWebs. The only difference is the cost of the license. All support and further information comes from PC Tools not Cape Cod Web Service, we will not provide technical information or support for this product.

Re: Server Unreachable

Description:

Last night some users (not all) were unable to surf to, or get email from our servers. There were no errors with the server and it was running as normal.

At this point as best as we can tell, there was a DNS drop at some point on the web which prevented some networks from resolving to our site.

Our site was reachable from the UU Network but not most others. We have requested an investigation into the DNS drop. It is possible that someone tried to hijack our IP's and DNS but, it's too early to tell. Our servers are currently reachable and we will monitor them today. We will try to keep you informed on the status of this issue if and when we are updated.

We are sorry for the inconvenenice.

AlertFraudulent Emails January 12 2005, 07:27 pm
From: Cape Cod Web Service

To: All Customers

Problem: Fraudulent Emails

Description:

We would like to remind our customers about fraudulent or bogus emails that have been increasing on the internet the past few weeks.

We have had many reports of emails that are requesting customers to upgrade or update their credit cards or checking account information.

They appear to be coming from legitimate sources, such as Ebay, Pay Pal, Chase Bank etc. Do NOT reply to them! Do NOT click on any link the email.

These emails are called "phishing" emails. They prey on people who conduct electronic commerce as well as others. The links seem to be legitimate, they take you to a thief's site and ask you for your credit card information and passwords etc. Once they have the information they then sell it. Identity theft is one of the fastest rising crimes in the U.S.

If you believe the email is legitimate AND MOST ARE NOT, go directly the site you do business with, i.e. type the address into your browser (www.bankname.place use the address that you normally would, NOT the one in the email) and check the site out.

Some Do not's;

Do NOT use the addresses in the email.

Do NOT click on any link in the email.

Do NOT respond or reply to the email.

This is not to say that legitimate banks and sites don't request information or send offers via email. Most legitimate emails requesting updated account information from a bank, credit card or other company with which you do business will be addressed to the recipient by name, not generically -- they know who you are and what your account number is. That is not a guarantee it is genuine, but it is a good indicator. Using the telephone to call the company's regular customer service number is an excellent way to verify that a message is legitimate. Make sure you surf to the site manually and check the URL (domain name). Most will tell you to surf to their site and log in to your account. This is the preferred method as you control where you are surfing.

Enter information within their site only and make sure you see the "Secure" lock on your browser. If you do not see a secure lock symbol then the site is not secure, do not enter sensitive information.

For more information on PC Security and email "Phishing" check our web site at:

http://www.ccwebs.com/security/index.htm#Email%20Spoofs

http://www.ccwebs.com/security or look for it off the members page on our site at www.capecodwebservice.com or www.ccwebs.com

Remember, when in doubt DELETE IT!

We would like to thank Peter S., Mary L. and Kenneth H. for reminding us about this rising threat.

As a side note, just as I was typing this notice I received an email request to: "update my Citizens Bank account information or the account will be suspended in five days". Even the link looked legitimate, but it's not. (I don't even do business with Citizens Bank).

Please keep on the lookout for these emails and DELETE them!

Thank you,

Re: Server problems - routing

Description:

After many hours of work we have found the problem is not with our servers, but, rather with a telco routing facility. Our server along with thousands of others are not being sent traffic through the router facility correctly. This is what is causing the intermittent outages.

We have been in contact with the facility, they are aware of the problem and are working to correct this issue.

They were unable to give us a time table to repair. However, they are making sites available on a alternateting basis so that the sites are reachable while the repairs are made. We will post more information as we receive it.

Our site is available and working (email, ftp, http, etc) at this time. If you are unable at any time to send or receive email please try it periodically until the issue is resolved.

We would like to thank all our customers for their patience. Your understanding over the past few days has been overwhelming.

We believe that the email problem has been rectified, we will watch the system with guarded optimism. The email issue turned out to be a multi-level problem spanning more that one system and hardware. Working with technical specialists we believe all issues with email have been addressed.

If you should find you are having trouble with email please let us know. We are using a system monitoring service for now to watch for errors. The monitoring software slows things down a bit, so we will remove it in a few days.

Email that was sent to you during the outage may have been bounced (returned to the sender) so they should know to resend the email. Other emails were captured and saved. To be on the safe side you may want to send a "broadcast" email to your address book to alert them there was an outage and to resend.

Again, we would like to thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation over the past few days. It made dealing with this issue easier.

Problem: All Server functions restored

Description:

First and foremost we would like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding over the past several days.

All server functions, ftp, email, FrontPage and hosting have been restored. We will monitor the server closely for the next few days to make sure it remains fully functional.

Most service was restored on 09-21-2004 at 12:32am the remainder at 03:14am.

Some email that was sent to you was returned to the sender as undeliverable. We suggest to our customers that you send a "broadcast" email to your contacts informing them that your ISP email servers were down, and to re-send any email they may have sent over the past few days.

Again, we are very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused our customers. A more detailed email will be sent later today or tomorrow regarding this issue.

Again, thank you for your patience,

Mark B.

Outages in Florida August 16 2004, 02:31 pm
To: All customers

From: Cape Cod Web Service

Re: Outages in Florida

Description: We have been getting calls asking when service will be restored to locations in Florida. Most locations have been restored except the hardest hit areas "Charley" went through. Please be aware, most telephone lines in Punta Gorda and surrounding city's/town's in FL are gone. The telco estimates two to three weeks to restore 96% of downed lines. The power companies are reporting about two weeks to restoration.

If you are emailing a relative in these areas its a good bet you will not get email from them until the phone lines are restored. Remember dial-up service uses normal phone lines.

Thank You, TechHelp@ccwebs.com

Happy faceCape Cod Web Service.com Newsletter June 14 2004, 12:06 am
Cape Cod Web Service.com Newsletter

Welcome to our newsletter.

In this newsletter:

1. Spam Filtering -- Now Running. 2. Setting up Message Mail Rules. 3. ccwebs Instant Messenger.

==================

1. Spam Filtering -- Now Running.

As many of our users have noticed by now our spam filter is up and running. Spam is now flagged as "*****SPAM*****" in the subject line. All you need to do is create a message rule to either automatically delete it or place it in a "spam" folder were you can view at it at your convenience (see making message rules below).

The spam filter flags emails using a points system. Each part of the email is scanned and scored a rating by many factors. If the score is high it is considered spam, it is flagged. For example, if it sees the email address masked, it rates that line as "2.8 OBSCURED_EMAIL - BODY: Message seems..." then it rates the next item, say the subject line, and so on. A high score (all items total) and the email will be flagged as spam, a lower score it will not be flagged. This does not mean that an email addressed to you directly with adult or other AD content will automaticly be flagged. The program tries to discriminate "junk" email from normal email.

We will be making adjustments to the system as time goes on. We hope this spam filtering will help ease the spam problem.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Setting up Message Mail Rules.

The following describes how to setup a mail/message rule in Outlook Express* to automatically delete email marked as SPAM by our anti-spam program.

~ Start Outlook Express.

~ Click on "Tools", then "Message", then "Mail".

~ The "Message Rules" dialog box should be displayed.

~ Click the "New" button. The "New Meassage Rules" dialog box will open.

~ In the item "1. Select the conditions for your rule." section, place a checkmark in the "Where the subject line contains specific words" box.

~ In the item "2. Select the actions for the rule" section, click (put) a checkmark in the "Delete it" box. Note: here is were you can send the spam to a specific folder if you wish. A word of caution, do NOT select "Do not download it from the server", if you do your mailbox will become full and you will be unable to receive email.

~ In the item "3. Rule Description" section you will notice a highlighted link: "contains specific words", click on it.

~ A "Type specific words" dialog box will open. Type in the top box the word "SPAM" (without the quotation marks) then click on the "ADD" button. The word "SPAM" will now be in the lower box under "Where subject line contains".

~ Click on "OK", the dialog box will close.

~ Click on "OK" on the "Message Rules" dialog box, the box should close.

That's it. All email that comes in flagged with "SPAM" in the subject line will automatically be deleted from this point on. If you want to look at the deleted SPAM email just go into your "Deleted Items" folder. Email previously received with the SPAM flag will be unaffected.

For further information on using Outlook Express* functions please use the "Help" system in the program or contact the software manufacturer. We do not supply free technical support for this issue, other than this article.~*

If you use any other program for email, please use that programs help system for instructions on how to setup mail rules. Some programs do not have such filters or rules.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

5. ccwebs Instant Messenger

We have just released our ccwebs Instant Messenger. It is a great alternative to AOL - AIM, MSM .NET messenger. It will allow you to instant message, chat and A/V with ccwebsIM, AOL and MSN services as well as your Buddy lists etc.

The downloadable program is only 1.44 meg (including the install package, the ccwebsIM program itself is only 640K) and it does not invade, takeover or hijack your system. Except for one small AD at the bottom of the ccwebsIM screen there is no other AD system or pop-ups. We own and control the software, we do not sell or make available to anyone your email address. This is free to our customers an your friends (they do not have to subscribe to ccwebs internet service to use the ccwebsIM program). Just download the program and IM someone.

Happy faceCape Cod Web Service - Newsletter April 26 2004, 07:00 pm
Cape Cod Web Service.com Newsletter

Welcome to our newsletter.

In this newsletter:

1. Microsoft Pop-up Blocker

2. Spam and anti-virus filter we currently perform

3. Spam Filtering -- coming soon

4. Anti-Virus -- Filter

5. Your Credit Card Information

==================

1. Microsoft* Pop-up Blocker - Add-in.

Microsoft* has released a "Toolbar" add-in pop-up blocker for their Internet Explorer. This Add-in can be removed without re-installing I.E. This is a free utility and can be downloaded from Microsoft* at: http://toolbar.msn.com/ (please see their web site for any license, use restrictions and any system requirements.) The Toolbar does have some other items in it, but, it's well worth it to have for the pop-up blocker. The file is small (a fast download) about 214 KB.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Spam and anti-virus filtering we currently perform.

We have for the past three years had a low level of spam and ant-virus filtering. We were able to filter some viruses and spam. This level of filtering has become insufficient for all practical purposes. The current filters required manually configuration and constant monitoring. These filters deal with only specific spam and viruses. They are unable to efficiently deal with the spam and virus threat that is now on the web. We will be undertaking new software initiatives to deal with spam and virus threats. (Please see "Spam Filtering".)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Spam Filtering -- coming soon.

We will be installing global spam filtering software shortly. We have been researching a filtering system for many months. We hope to have the new software configured and installed shortly.

The spam issue is a complex one. We believe in an open system, that is "raw" Internet. We do not piggy-back, block, add streaming Ads or in any other way slow down or interfere with the Internet signal you receive. We find it deplorable to have to scan or filter email, but, spam is now causing problems with legitimate email delivery. The filtering is done completely by software, it is not seen by anyone, your email will still be confidential.

We have carefully monitored the spam problem over the last year, it has worsened. Despite legislation and "self-rule" the spammers have only found new and more efficient ways of spamming. While anti-spam software is not perfect, we hope to reduce the spam by about 78% to 82%. This level of filtering is the best we can do without making it difficult for our customers to receive legitimate email.

The filtering system we will be installing will be as un-intrusive as possible, we have looked at many packages and all have drawbacks. The system we have chosen has the fewest drawbacks and the cleanest filter we could find. A notice or newsletter will be sent out when the system is up and running, we hope the only difference that our customers will see is less spam. Of course you must be using your ccwebs.com email account to benefit from this service.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Anti-Virus -- Filter

We are looking at some anti-virus software that will strip viruses from email at the server level. That means that before you get your email it will have been scanned once already. This system is NOT meant to replace your anti-virus software it will be a first-line of defense only. It will not be able to catch all viruses, some are undetectable at the server level, but, should be able to strip or disable many. This pre-screening for virus infected email is about six to eight months away, we are working to find a software solution as soon as possible.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Your Credit Card Information

While discussing with a customer how we handle credit card information security, it was brought to our attention that we should share with our customers the process. All our customers credit card information (as well as debit, checking etc.) are stored only in our "cold" or off-line system (not connected to the Internet or server). When we process your credit card information, for monthly charges etc. the information is then moved to our online systems in an encrypted form and sent via a secure gateway to the bank processing center. We use Authorize.net, one of the foremost leaders in secure on-line credit card gateways for the transactions. The information is then removed from our on-line system back to our "cold" or off-line system. While no system is 100% safe, we take every possible precaution to protect your information.

System Maintenance - extended December 11 2003, 03:28 pm
From: Cape Cod Web Service.com

To: All Cape Cod Web Service Customers

RE: System Maintenance - extended

We needed to extend our system maintenance today beyond the estimated time, due to a software module failure. This required that our servers be taken off-line again to replace the faulty software module. Unfortunately this required that the mail servers be off-line for a short time as well.

We are sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

System Maintenance December 8 2003, 04:11 pm
From: Cape Cod Web Service.com

To: All Cape Cod Web Service Customers

RE: System Maintenance

We will conduct infrastructure maintenance to our systems on December 9, 2003 at 12:30AM EDT. This upgrade will require that our servers are taken off-line. The services for these systems will resume at approximately 4AM EST on Wednesday, December 9, 2003.

All hosting customers will be unable to access their servers during the maintenance, routing to the mail severs will also be interrupted. Our secure servers will also be off-line as well.

This will NOT affect dial up log-in and surfing, customers will be unable to route to our main index or server pages (ccwebs.com).

Thank you for your patience.
