I keep getting Messenger POP Up windows when surfing?
You can prevent WinPopUPs by disabling the Messenger service, however, this may leave you exposed to other security issues so this approach by itself is not recommended.
Note: Some applications: Anti-virus, SQL Job Scheduler, UPS systems, etc.. use Messenger alerts to notify you are critical system events. If you use such products, then you should leave Messenger enabled and use a firewall/router to block the PopUPs.
Here are the procedures for disabling the Messenger service on Windows 2000 and XP systems:
Click: Start/Settings/Control Panel
Open: Administrative Tools
Open: Services
Open: 'Messenger' Service
Click: Stop button
Change 'Startup Type' to MANUAL
Click OK to close everything

If I have Call Waiting on my line, should I disable it while I’m online?
Yes. If you have call waiting active while you are on line, your Internet connection will be terminated when
you receive a call, don't change if this is the action you want.
To eliminate this problem you can disable your call feature by following these steps.
This procedure will work for Microsoft® Windows® 98 & up. The process is similar on other operating systems.
1. Click the Start button at the lower left of your desktop.
2. Move your cursor to Settings.
3. Click on Control Panel.
4. Double-click on Modems; the Modems Properties window will open.
5. Under the General tab, click the Dialing Properties button at the bottom of that window.
6. Click the box in front of To disable call waiting; a checkmark will appear in it and the drop down box at the far right of that line will activate.
7. In the drop down box, highlight the appropriate code for disabling call waiting:
- for touch-tone phones, it's usually *70
- for rotary/pulse phones, it's usually 1170
You might want to check with your local telephone company to verify the code in your area.
Click the OK button at the bottom of each window to close them all.
Click the OK button at the bottom of the Modems Properties window to close it.
To reactivate your call waiting feature once you log off the Internet, follow the same steps, except highlight 70# instead of *70.
